baarbd's second event and first 'race'
followed up the on the success of the first one. More than 30
athletes turned up at Stevens Creek County park in Cupertino to take
on the challenge of a course designed by Rich Brazeau and set by
Rich and Scott Porter.
Abilities and experience ranged from beginner to elite and covered everything in between. The day started with greetings to friends and introductions to new racers, as everyone caught up on the latest AR news. Things kicked off with a navigation clinic put on by Mark Manning of ARNavSupplies.com and Will Gilmore of the Dirty Avocados
After the clinic athletes went through the mandatory gear check and made last-minute preparations. Once maps and instructions were handed out the route-planning began, with teams scattered around the park poring over their maps.
Rich conducted the pre-race briefing, Jen Klafin counted down to the start and we were off!
The course started with a 4 CP trekking section that ranged up and down the ridges surrounding the park. This was followed by a 5 CP bike section with serious climbing, beautiful single-track along the tops of ridges and down into the forests, and finished with a long fast descent back to the start. The fastest finisher, Kent R. smashed the course in 5 hours, beating Rich's 'fast' estimate by half an hour! The rest of the field finished between 5.5 - 7.5 hours or completed a short-course. Many thanks to Rich, Scott, Mark and Will for making this happen and to all the participants for making it a success! |

[09/18/2006] Thanks to Jen and Galen for organizing this, to Rich and Scott for designing a fun practice course, and to Mark for talking about navigation before the race. I have not been able to go out on my own in a while and so I really enjoyed being on such a short course with a lot of good racers there. The course itself was well designed allowing anyone in almost any shape to participate. AR is growing: In 1999, a group of local racers descended on this same area for a practice race in preparation for the expedition race, the Southern Traverse. About eight people turned out of which two were beginners, my room mate and I. As a beginner, I remember feeling like that training race was an expedition in itself. However, the event in '99 really hooked me into the sport. This Saturday, it was good to see new people in the audience. So, I hope to help put on and support more of these fun events in the future especially in the off season. -thanks Thanks to Jen and Galen for organizing this, to Rich and Scott for designing a fun practice course, and to Mark for talking about navigation before the race.
